# The late-auction endgame: when roster slots become more valuable than rankings

The draft changes when every manager has spent most of the budget. At that point, rankings matter less than roster math. A player who would be a $5 target early can become a $14 necessity when six managers still need a starting RB and only four credible options remain.

## Late-auction rules

1. **Keep a legal-roster reserve.** If you have eight spots open, never let your balance fall below eight dollars.
2. **Price the room, not the sheet.** Recalculate each player's maximum based on remaining budgets and open slots.
3. **Target contingent value.** Backup RBs and ambiguous depth charts are more useful late than low-ceiling veterans.
4. **Do not spend $2 to save $1.** Once a player is in your tier, bid decisively or move on.

In a top-heavy room, patience creates late leverage because early overspending leaves opponents with fewer legal bids. But patience is not hoarding. Spend when your roster's remaining needs make a player uniquely valuable.
