Beer Sheets without the cult: turning tier cliffs into auction dollars
Beer Sheets' useful idea is not “rank players harder.” It is to identify cliffs: places where the next available player is meaningfully worse. In a $200, 12-team standard league with 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, FLEX, K and DEF, the budget should follow the cliffs—not the television celebrities.
Cross-position scarcity snapshot
- RB: DraftCall measures an 8.3 PPG gap from RB1 to RB24.
- WR: 8.1 PPG from WR1 to WR36.
- TE: 4.3 PPG from TE1 to TE12.
- QB: 5.3 PPG from QB1 to QB12.
- K/DEF: smaller gaps; stream unless your scoring makes them unusually important.

The auction translation
In a one-QB format, an expensive quarterback consumes scarce dollars without consuming scarce lineup supply. The room can start only 12 quarterbacks, while it starts at least 36 RB/WR slots before flex. That is why a $30 QB needs a very specific reason: rushing insulation, an extreme scoring setup, or a genuine discount.
At RB and WR, pay for separation only when the price is below your replacement-adjusted ceiling. A $5 difference between two names in the same tier is usually noise. A $15 difference between a tier and the cliff below it can be real roster value.
Decision rule
When choosing between positions, ask: “If I pass, what is the next player I can start every week, and how much worse is he?” If the answer is “barely worse” at QB, wait. If the answer is “I fall off a cliff at RB or WR,” spend there—unless the room is charging a panic tax.
