# Preseason injury reports: a three-bucket reaction plan

Preseason injury news creates bad auction decisions because every update feels urgent. A useful process is to sort the information into three buckets: role unchanged, role uncertain, and role materially changed.

## Bucket one: role unchanged

A maintenance day, a minor camp limitation, or a coach saying a player is being managed does not automatically change a projection. Record the update, check whether practice participation changes, and avoid paying less merely because a headline sounds dramatic.

## Bucket two: role uncertain

This is where the draft board should move, but not necessarily collapse. A player with an unclear timetable, a new complication, or a role that depends on the next medical update belongs in a wider projection range. The right response is often a lower auction ceiling or a backup plan, not a total ban.

## Bucket three: role materially changed

A surgery, a reserve-list designation, a confirmed absence, or a depth-chart change that moves a player out of important offensive situations deserves a real adjustment. The replacement player matters too, but do not automatically transfer every lost touch to the backup. The offense may change its structure.

## The evidence rule

Use current official team reports and the NFL’s injury reporting when making a current claim. Historical injury datasets are useful for research, but they are not current news. That discipline is boring. It is also how you avoid spending real auction dollars on a rumor.
