# Tight end tiers: pay for separation, not name recognition

Tight end is where auction drafts punish indecision. The top of the position can create a weekly advantage, but the middle is often a long list of players whose value depends on routes, red-zone work, and whether the offense has enough volume to support them.

## Build the position in tiers

- **Difference-makers:** players with stable routes, red-zone involvement, and enough athletic upside to win weeks.
- **Reliable starters:** players with a clear role and a usable weekly floor, even if the ceiling is ordinary.
- **Contingency plays:** players whose value depends on an injury, a depth-chart change, or a new offensive role.

## What standard scoring rewards

Reception totals alone do not separate tight ends in a non-PPR league. Yardage, touchdowns, and team scoring environment matter more. A tight end who is the second read near the goal line can be more valuable than one who catches short passes between the twenties.

Do not force a premium purchase because the position feels thin. If the top tier is too expensive, a deliberate late-pair strategy can work: draft one stable role and one player with a specific path to a larger role. The key is knowing what would need to change for the second player to become useful.
