# Wide receivers in standard scoring: targets are the floor, touchdowns are the swing

Standard scoring does not make wide receiver volume unimportant. It makes the translation from volume to fantasy points more demanding. A target is useful because it creates opportunity, but the final score depends on what happens after the ball is thrown.

## Separate the floor from the swing

Targets, routes, and team pass volume are the floor signals. Air yards and first-read usage help identify ceiling. Touchdowns are the swing factor, but touchdown totals are also the stat most likely to create false confidence when a player’s role has not changed.

## The questions that improve the board

- Does the receiver play in two-receiver sets or only in specialized packages?
- Does the team keep him on the field in the red zone?
- Are the targets concentrated or spread across several players?
- Is the quarterback willing and able to throw outside the numbers and downfield?
- Can the player score without needing an unsustainable touchdown rate?

In an auction, the dangerous mistake is paying for last year’s touchdowns while ignoring a declining route role. The opposite mistake is fading a player whose target share, route participation, and scoring-area usage all point in the same direction just because the previous season’s touchdown total was ordinary.

Build standard-scoring receiver tiers around role and scoring paths. Let the touchdown projection move the player within the tier, not erase the evidence underneath it.
